Laphroaig Distillery Live 2009

Written by Claudio on 30/09/2009

As we anticipated, on the 25th of September the Laphroaig Distillery Live 2009 edition was broadcasted, this time live from the USA distillery Maker’s Mark.

The search of perfection in the world of Scotch can happen in unexpected and marvellous ways, like the connection between the Bourbon of Maker’s Mark and Laphroaig. From the mountains of Ozark, where Maker’s Mark gets its oak, to the special dehydration technique used to prepare the staves, the casks used for the maturation of Maker’s Mark’s Bourbon are sent more than 6.000km east from Loretto (Kentucky), to Laphroaig’s distillery, where they start to live again and contribute to create the unique taste of Laphroaig, that expressions that make it world renowned.

This year some of the most famous experts of the world of whisky were attending. John Hansell, one of the most important American whisky writers. He writes on many newspapers and he is Malt Advocate publisher, the foremost magazine for Whisky and Whiskey fans in the US. Kevin Smith, Vice-President and Master Distiller at Maker’s Mark. And lastly, our John Campbell, Distillery Manager of Laphroaig.

The result is a 41 minutes nice video, maybe a little smarter than the Laphroaig Distillery Live 2008 broadcasted from Laphroaig’s distillery, but surely has nothing to do with the rowdy American show that I was afraid to watch. Another great occasion to get to know the real protagonists, those persons who hide behind the exceptional products, that we are lucky to taste.

During the broadcast the Laphroaig 10 years standard was tasted, together with the 18 years, the 25 years second edition ( 50.9% ABV) and the Bourbon Maker’s Mark. Two cocktails (Manhattan and Rob Roy) followed, matched with two course made respectively with Maker’s Mark and Laphroaig as base.

I personally agree with the use of Whisky in cocktails and also when they are matched with food, I don’t see the Single Malt as a historical monument to protect, but a high-quality product that has to be used as a necessary ingredient to create high-quality compositions. It is obvious how a cocktail or a sweet made with a low-quality whisky (for example a blend bought at a supermarket for 6€ a bottle) will never guarantee a good result. Who, like me, had the fortune to participate to the many dinners proposed by the GluGlu Whisky Clubwww.gluglu2000.it – knows how great can be to match whisky with food.
