This whisky substitutes the glorious 15 years. Will it be available for the Italian market? At the moment it is not possible to know it...


It was announced in the autumn of 2008, and made available for the German market in Spring 2009, even before the arrival to the distillery, curse them! The release of the new 18 years has been surrounded by mysteries.
First of all, we couldn’t understand the reason of abandoning the old and glorious 15 years when many people thought it was the best expression of Laphroaig’s standard bottlings.
I was surprised of this passage from to 15 to the 18 years, being conscious of the distilleries’ lack of stock for old barrels, caused by a boom sales. The introduction of the Quarter Cask, noble but determined by the necessity of speeding up the maturation of whisky, made me think about a lack of old barrels in Laphroaig’s warehouse.
But we are here. The 18 years, 10€ more expensive than the 15 years, tastes different. The alcohol is brought from the 15 years’ 43% to the 48%, which contributes in making the distillate more delicate and less angular. Three years more to be spent in barrels are perceived, you’ll taste a wood that is sweeter and less spicy.
However, the 18 years is an excellent product, surely influenced by the new tendencies of the market and it stops to divide people between who love it and who hate it.
The 15 years was officially imported to Italy, but it was difficult to find. It just was available on the shelves of few supermarkets and specialized wine shops. What can we expect from the 18 years? At the moment, no answer.
